About This Program

The UMN/Lakewood Health System Rural Family Medicine Residency is a 2-2-2 program preparing physicians for full-scope rural family medicine with an emphasis on obstetrics training. Residents complete PGY-1 with our urban partner, North Memorial Family Medicine Residency in the Twin Cities, before transitioning to Lakewood Health System in Staples, Minnesota, for two years of immersive rural training. Our longitudinal curriculum emphasizes continuity, high-volume obstetrics (with more than 500 births annually at Lakewood), hands-on procedures, progressive autonomy, and broad experience across clinic, inpatient, emergency, behavioral, women’s and community health. Residents are expected to graduate prepared for full spectrum w/OB practice.
