What is FREIDA™?

FREIDA™ is the American Medical Association Residency and Fellowship Database® where medical students and residents can easily search through more than 13,000 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs.

Can FREIDA help me find a residency or fellowship?

Yes! FREIDA allows you to search our vast database of over 13,000 residency and fellowship programs, all ACGME-accredited. FREIDA's exceptional tools and resources let you:

  • Target and refine your search using up to 35 filters; for example, location (using list or search by Google maps), program type, salary, and much more.
  • Access FREIDA's Specialty Guide, designed to simplify medical students' specialty selection process, highlight major specialties, detail training information and provide access to related specialty society information.
  • Search for newly vacant positions posted by program directors.

ACCESS AND MEMBERSHIP

Do I have to be an AMA member to use FREIDA?

No, FREIDA is an open-access database with more than 13,000 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs. Access unlimited program views, save favorite custom searches and nickname your favorites to re-use with a free AMA account. AMA members gain access to additional tools and resources such as the FREIDA Road to Residency Guide, Calculator, members-only dashboard where you can add personalized notes, save, compare and rank programs. What is the FREIDA Dashboard?

FREIDA's members-only dashboard allows users to easily save programs, compare programs' attributes side-by-side and download the results to a worksheet. The dashboard also provides a personalized section to add your notes, program ratings, application status and post-interview thoughts. When it comes time to create your Rank Order List for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the dashboard will have everything you need in one place.

How do I find information about residency programs?

How do I start using FREIDA?

How do I search for vacant residency and fellowship positions?

Click on the vacant positions search link on the right navigation bar under "Search Programs". Program directors can post positions that have become vacant during the year or are left unfilled after the Match. Users can search by specialty, state, and program year level. You may also want to check with the specialty society of the area in which you are seeking a position. In addition, there is a service offered by FindAResident™, a site sponsored by the AAMC.

How do I save my program searches on FREIDA?

AMA members can save results of a search into the comparison list or into the dashboard. Select the program you are interested in, either from the search results or from a program's page on FREIDA and select "Add to Comparison" or "Add to Dashboard". You can also add programs to the dashboard from the comparison table. If you are not an AMA member, you can add programs to the comparison list only during your current browser session.

DATA INTEGRITY

Where does FREIDA's data come from?

Program data on FREIDA comes directly from the programs themselves via the GME Track/National GME Census ( www.aamc.org/gmetrack ), an annual online survey jointly conducted by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Data is loaded onto FREIDA in August for those programs that complete the National GME Census by the July due date, again in October (for data received by the end of September), and a final upload in February.

Can programs change their data after information has been uploaded from the annual survey?

Yes!

If you are a Program Director or Coordinator:

  • Log into your personal AMA account, visit freida.ama-assn.org .
  • Within your Program Director Portal, click on "Find Your Program," then enter your 10-digit ACGME program ID and password. To have your password reset, email [email protected] .
  • You will then be able to submit changes to your program's listing in FREIDA or post a vacant position. NOTE: Please allow 1-3 business days for all approvals.
  • Your program(s) will remain in the portal until you remove it.

Program personnel can also make changes to the basic program information by clicking on "Resources for Program Directors."

Are there other ways to enhance my program listing?

You can add a complimentary virtual tour or interview video that features your residency or fellowship program. Email us your 10-digit ACGME program ID and desired YouTube video link to [email protected] . Here's an example. Also, our "Life & Culture" functionality allows you to describe your program and its culture in more detail. Please complete a short survey, and a member of the FREIDA team will review your submission.

Why is there more information for some programs than others?

Basic information is provided for all ACGME-accredited programs and Board-approved combined programs. In addition, most programs choose to provide even more information about their programs by "leasing" supplemental space on FREIDA.

Why can't I find listings for a particular specialty?

FREIDA contains listings for two types of programs: (1) programs in specialties that have Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) program requirements, and (2) combined programs that are jointly approved by two or more applicable certification boards (e.g., internal medicine/psychiatry).

If you cannot find listings for a particular specialty or combined program (for example, cutaneous oncology), check with the relevant specialty society for more information about these non-ACGME accredited specialties. Why isn't our program listed in FREIDA despite it being accredited? If your program was newly accredited within the past several months, notify FREIDA by e-mail at ( [email protected] ) and include your 10-digit program ID number and basic information.

I'm having trouble accessing my AMA account

Already an AMA member but cannot access the FREIDA Dashboard?

  • To check if your membership is in good standing, go to amc.ama-assn.org
  • If you are a member, but your membership type is non-physician, click the link to upgrade your account.
  • Update your online account to Physician, Resident, or Medical Student and log out of all AMA pages.
  • Go to FREIDA.ama-assn.org and log back in to use your AMA member dashboard.

How can I find out about the accreditation status of a program?

All programs on FREIDA are ACGME-accredited or are combined programs approved by their respective specialty boards. The latest information on the accreditation status of ACGME-accredited programs, including program review dates by residency review committees, can be found on the ACGME's program search.
