Neurocritical Care

The medical subspecialty of Neurocritical Care is devoted to the comprehensive multisystem care of the critically ill neurology and neurological surgery patients. Like other intensivists, the neurointensivist assumes either primary or shared responsibility for the care of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), coordinating the neurological, surgical, and medical management of the patient. Most uniquely, neurocritical care is concerned with the interface between the central and peripheral nervous systems and other organ systems in the setting of critical illness. The ultimate goal of NCC is to provide optimal care to a unique patient population that simultaneously requires expert management of acute nervous system illness and trauma while integrating all other aspects of critical care medicine.
